Nick Tsagaris McDonalds | Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 Smartphone Appeals To Whole New Audience

When it comes to choosing a smartphone they really are all very much the same, perhaps a squared edge here, a rounded corner there, and of course the Apple versus Samsung debate that will continue for the ages.

However, for those looking for something very new, and a little different, Samsung's latest Galaxy Z Flip3 ticks more than enough boxes to be a great choice.

While normally when a new smartphone launches we get statistics about how much thinner and lighter it is, along with demonstrations about how amazing the camera is - that's not at all what the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is about.

In fact, the camera on this phone isn't a patch on what Apple and Samsung are doing on their most expensive models - however, it's most certainly first class among the entire smartphone market.

You have a standard and wide angle camera which can be used like a "normal" phone, but those same high quality cameras you'd normally call the "rear" cameras are also accessible as "selfie" cameras when the phone is flipped shut, using the small cover screen as a viewfinder.

That cover screen is four times larger than last year's model, one of several changes that take this from being just a gimmick to being a mainstream smartphone contender.

When flipped shut the phone can be used as a camera, but you are also able to see new message notifications and even read the detail of some messages without opening the phone, as well as using timers, voice recording, weather and other simple widgets.

It's not quite enough yet to stop you opening the phone more than you really need to when you're checking what emails or messages are coming through - but it's a great at-a-glance screen for the basics.

When opened, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 is just like any other smartphone. It really is. It's thin, the screen is bright and vibrant and it doesn't disappoint in everyday use.

Yes, there's a "crease" in the middle, where the screen folds shut - but you don't see it when you're using it, you just feel it when you're swiping up and down.

The very fact I'm using a phone that simply flips shut with a folding screen is remarkable, this technology is just two years old, and this is really only the second generation of the "Flip" variant for Samsung, yet it feels so refined you'd think it had been around for many more years.

In reality, the greatest feature of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 is the price - $1499.

That's the price you'll pay for an iPhone 12, so for a smartphone with a folding screen that flips shut to carry the same price tag is a big win for consumers.
